Resolutions for 2023, New Year, New Life!
The start of a new year brings with it expectations, desires, and aspirations. In fact, it's common for many people to take stock of how things went, what's still needed, and to look ahead, aiming for how they want to feel and what they want to achieve.
In 1, 2, 3, the counter will reset, and you'll have 365 days full of opportunities to start, create, or strengthen the things you desire, whether it's establishing a new habit, launching a business, beginning that therapy process you've been avoiding for so long, or saying "yes" that you've been longing for—in short, anything you consider challenging.
The key is to take conscious steps toward achieving those important things, not impulsively, nor driven by the emotion of the moment, but through action, routine, and discipline. So instead of saying "I'll start on Monday," say "I'll start today." Knowing that each day brings you closer to your goal and that every little bit counts is a great start.
Planning is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Make it easy, start where you are and with what you have. Don't wait to feel motivated to begin.
Here are some steps for a 2023 free of worries and close to your goals. Think about: Desire, Desired Outcome, Obstacle, and Planning.
Step 1: DESIRE
Identify what you want to achieve in any area of your life.
What do I desire?
What do I long for?
Step 2: DESIRED OUTCOME
Think about the desired outcome. Recreate in your mind the emotion you will feel upon achieving it. Be clear and specific about it.
Ask yourself: How will you feel upon achieving it? How will you feel when it happens?
Step 3: OBSTACLE
Think about possible internal obstacles and difficulties that may arise along the way. Remember to focus on internal aspects that could hinder you from achieving your goal.
What possible obstacles might arise?
What mindset or behavior might sabotage your desire?
Step 4: PLANNING
Once you identify that your desires are realistic and achievable through the changes you can make to reach them, create a strategy and action plan to face and overcome those obstacles effectively. Having a predetermined and planned approach helps clarify your purpose and reduces uncertainty about the unknown.
Other aspects to consider:
Learn to know yourself and connect with your own interests, without guilt.
Important! Remember to reward your achievements, no matter how small, as you accomplish them.
Since life is always in motion, remember to be flexible, adapting to the changes that arise along the way, recognizing that there are things beyond our control.
“Starting a behavioral change on a psychologically significant day, such as the first day of the month, a birthday, or an anniversary, can improve your chances of success,” says John Norcross, a professor of psychology at the University of Scranton and co-author of a study on New Year's resolutions published in Time magazine.
