Disc Replacement
Historically, certain types of damaged and painful discs have been treated with spinal fusion surgery. In carefully selected situations, spinal fusion is an excellent option for treating discogenic pain and clinical studies have demonstrated very favorable results.
Recent technologic advances now allow the spinal surgeon to remove damaged discs and replace them with mechanical artificial disc replacement implants. Although disc replacement technology is in its infancy in the United States, the early results have been very promising.
