Shin Splints
Shin splints, or medial tibial stress syndrome, is a common lower leg injury in runners. The repetitive impact of hitting the ground can stress the bones, muscles, and joints causing pain, tenderness, and redness around the shins. This is usually due to a sudden increase in training, improper running shoes, poor running form, or a combination of all of the above.
Treatment includes using the "RICE" method (rest, ice, compression, elevate), stretching, foam rolling, and taking anti-inflammatories. Doing strenthening exercises and getting proper running sneakers, customized orthotics, and a running evaluation from a professional can prevent shin splints from reoccuring.
