Diana Barbur

Severe burns due to a domestic accident
Colombia
Diana Barbur, a Hospital Serena del Mar patient who overcame severe burns thanks to comprehensive medical care.
How did you hear about Hospital Serena del Mar?

One Sunday morning, Diana was handling a bottle of paint thinner near the stove while making coffee, unaware that the chemical was highly flammable. At that moment, the container cracked and the liquid spilled onto the lit stove, causing her hands to catch fire. Out of shock, she threw the bottle toward the sink, which triggered a severe explosion and set the kitchen on fire. As she attempted to flee, Diana slipped on the burning floor, suffering severe injuries to her legs.

Fortunately, her husband was still at home and managed to put out the fire on her body. After controlling the domestic fire and assessing the severity of the situation, they decided to transfer her immediately to Hospital Serena del Mar, where she was admitted through the Emergency Room.

Experience at Hospital Serena del Mar

Upon admission to the Emergency Room with high-complexity burns, Diana received immediate care under specialized protocols and was transferred to the only Burn Unit in Cartagena, located at Hospital Serena del Mar. Due to the severity of her injuries, she remained in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for six months, where cutting-edge technology was key to her treatment. Advanced systems strictly controlled the ambient temperature to prevent infections, and advanced wound care was applied using next-generation dressings that protected her tissues and promoted proper healing.

The cornerstone of her recovery was the hospital's compassionate and multidisciplinary support. A transdisciplinary team joined forces in physical therapy, pain management, nutritional support, and mental health. This comprehensive approach not only prevented physical sequelae from prolonged immobility but also provided Diana with emotional support throughout her entire journey.

Thanks to this medical and human synergy, Diana Barbur’s evolution was excellent. She achieved a full recovery of her mobility, autonomy, and overall well-being. Today, Diana has fully returned to her great passions—walking, dancing, and photography—demonstrating how the high-complexity medical care at Hospital Serena del Mar restores quality of life.
