Noel Lorett Castro is an outstanding senior master athlete, national champion in javelin throw, triple jump, and discus. His life on the track was drastically interrupted by severe, debilitating pain that other institutions had initially diagnosed as a lumbar (low back) issue. The pain was so intense that he could not walk, stand up from bed, or compete, forcing him to consider retiring from the sport he loves. After suffering from this pathology for a year in the city of Ibagué, and having undergone multiple physical therapy, rehabilitation, and pain medication protocols without any improvement, Noel decided to visit Hospital Serena del Mar looking for a definitive solution.
Upon physical examination in our specialized orthopedics consultation, the medical team detected that the true source of his pain was not lumbar but originated further down in the sacroiliac joint. Considering his status as a high-performance athlete at 82 years old, it was essential to offer a precise, rapid, and effective medical alternative to restore his quality of life without the need for major surgery.

Involved in the procedure
"I came here with a pain that wouldn't let me stand up. When I got home, I could barely walk, I couldn't stand up, I couldn't stand up... Imagine the nostalgia it brings me, because I am a roadrunner!" Noel recalls with deep emotion. To resolve his case, Dr. José Dangond proposed a minimally invasive procedure: a sacroiliac joint block/injection, performed under fluoroscopy and X-ray guidance in the operating room to ensure absolute and immediate precision.
The intervention was a resounding success. "In the recovery room, just five minutes after the procedure, Noel expressed that his pain had completely resolved," explains Dr. Dangond. Today, thanks to the cutting-edge medicine at Hospital Serena del Mar, Noel has left his debilitating pain behind and is ready to step back onto the track to keep winning.
