Carolina del Valle, Aitana's mother, initially visited our Emergency Department due to persistent diaper rash. What seemed to be a common condition took an unexpected turn when a mass was detected. The hospital immediately activated a highly complex, interdisciplinary management protocol to treat Aitana.
Through constant communication among the Radiology, Oncology, and Pediatric Surgery teams, and after conducting advanced studies—including contrast-enhanced MRIs and tests to rule out potential metastasis—the diagnosis was confirmed: a rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare type of tumor that accounts for only 3% to 4% of childhood cancer cases. At that moment, the family knew Aitana was beginning the most important battle of her life, accompanied by the finest medical team.

Involved in the procedure
“The diagnosis left us in shock, but the hospital’s response was immediate," Carolina recalls. Beyond medical care, the hospital provided comprehensive support through psychology and social work, allowing the family to find a space for emotional release and understanding at every stage of the process.
The surgical team decided to perform a vesicoscopy, a minimally invasive and highly precise surgical approach. This technique allowed them to operate on Aitana’s delicate anatomy while minimizing side effects; furthermore, the team of surgeons successfully saved the little girl’s urethra, something that initially seemed impossible. "It was a 'wow' moment; we felt that God was there and that these were the right professionals," her mother states.
Following the success of the procedure, the medical team celebrated the completion of this critical stage alongside the family. Today, Aitana has begun her oncological follow-up phase for the next five years, with the certainty of having received care that surpasses local standards. "We were in the best hospital in the city. The hygiene, the service, and the care are excellent. If you come to Hospital Serena del Mar, have full confidence that you will find a staff that will support you tirelessly and closely."
Currently, Aitana remains disease-free, standing as a living testimony to bravery and medical excellence.
